2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gullwing - Official Photos and Info

The car didn't appear at the Geneva auto show—it will instead debut at this September's Frankfurt show—but Mercedes-Benz nevertheless used the Swiss event as an excuse to release some tantalizing details regarding its long-rumored, new-generation Gullwing supercar. At the 2009 New York auto show, the automaker went one further and unveiled how the two-seat, carbon-fiber-laced interior will be configured

The Cadillac of Names

First of all, the remixed icon won’t be called the Gullwing or even the SLC as we had believed; its official name is Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. (That said, Mercedes does refer to the car as the “new Gullwing” in its press materials and also confirms the car will utilize the unique door configuration.) We’re wondering if Cadillac will object to the SLS moniker, but we doubt anyone will confuse this super-Benz with a full-size, four-door Caddy. This might be a good time to mention that we don’t yet know what the SLS will look like. Mercedes is holding back on releasing official exterior pictures of the car, but expect to see images surface early this summer. For now, information from Mercedes-Benz is limited to what’s under the SLS’s skin. Judging by the underlying structure, the car appears as if it will have proportions drawn directly from its 1950s forebear. Even the angles of the front and rear window openings look similar. The gullwing doors will pop off in the event of a rollover to allow occupants to escape.

2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG - Car News

What it is: A replacement for the rare and slow-selling Mercedes SLR McLaren supercar. The relationship with McLaren has ended, which makes the new car, code-named 197, purely a Mercedes AMG effort.

Why it’s important: It’s a 563-hp supercar from AMG that will go 0 to 60 in less than 3.8 seconds and hit a governed top speed of 196 mph. Plus, it has gullwing doors like the 1950s 300SL’s. Das ist gute!

2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan and Coupe Pricing, Model Timeline Announced - Car News

Mercedes-Benz used to be able to charge whatever it wanted for its luxury cars because, well, it could. But times have clearly changed, with formidable competition coming not just from BMW, Audi, and Cadillac, but also from Lexus, Infiniti, and even Hyundai’s compelling Genesis. Add to that an economic crisis that has even fancy folks hoarding their dollars, and the luxury-sedan picture is one where even Mercedes-Benz has to get aggressive about the pricing of its products.

And so the $49,475 base price of the V-6–powered 2010 E350 sedan, which represents a massive $4600 drop in price from 2009, should be of no surprise. Still, the huge price reduction is noteworthy, especially considering the new standard equipment such as Attention Assist, driver knee and front pelvis airbags, and full-panic Pre-Safe automatic emergency braking system.

What it is:
The long-awaited successor to McLaren’s F1 supercar. After developing the SLR for Mercedes, McLaren is back to producing its own cars. Although an ultralight supercar in the vein of the F1 had been a possibility, the P11 will be a mostly conventional mid-engined car to challenge Ferrari and Lamborghini.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E-class / E350 / E550 Coupe - First Drive Review

In car-speak, acronyms have their pros and cons. Alphanumeric, gobbledygook names force customers to use the parent company’s name every time they identify a car, casting a halo effect for the brand. “I drive a Legend,” for example, did less for Acura than, “I drive an Acura.” And so the RL was born.

Now apply that thinking to Mercedes-Benz, which, to be fair, has always used alphanumeric names. But as the company expanded its lineup to some 15 separate nameplates—not counting the AMG models—it resulted in confusion on the showroom floor and significant marketing challenges in promoting individual models. Things needed to get simpler, and they have: the replacements for Mercedes’ mid-sized CLK-class coupe and cabriolet models will henceforth be identified as part of the E-class family. (The CL coupes will also become part of the S-class lineup.)
